China Toy Recall Again and again and again

Reacting to this year’s largest toy recall in history, many consumers are making fewer impulsive buys and researching products online. A survey by online toy retailer eToys also found that 45 percent of respondents are now willing to pay more for toys made in America. The change in shopping habits comes at a critical time for retailers gearing up for the all-important holiday season.210aquadots.jpg

Much of the blame has been directed at China toy manufacturers, which have come under fire for making poorly designed toys with excessive amounts of lead or high-powered magnets, which can cause harm or death if swallowed.

Mattel Inc., the world’s largest toy maker, based in El Segundo, Calif., has alone recalled an estimated 21 million toys. Toys “R” Us delivered more bad news last Wednesday when it recalled about 16,000 Chinese-made Elite Operations toys, including Command Patrol Centers, Barracuda Helicopters, Super Rigs sets and three-packs of 8-inch figures, because of lead contamination.

More recalls of lead-tainted toys made in China were announced on Wednesday by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, including 380,000 toy cars sold at Dollar General stores.

Other warnings included smaller recalls of Dizzy Ducks music boxes, Winnie-the-Pooh spinning tops, “Big Red” wagons, Dragster and Funny Car toys, and Duck Family collectible wind-up toys, all because of paint with unsafe levels of lead.

Millions of similar toy recalls, involving Chinese-made products, have alarmed American consumers in recent months. Lead is toxic and can pose serious health risks to children, including brain damage.

The new batch of recalls totaled about 403,000 toys. Just at the time if this posting, Bassett Company has recalled their Chinese Cribs sold at Babies R Us and other locations nation wide. It appears that over 85 Wendy Bellisimo Cribs (China) have had the bolts come loose and can suffocate the baby in it. These cribs sold for upwards of $500.00.

U.S. lawmakers have proposed legislation that would virtually ban lead in toys and give the product safety agency more funding for testing, recalls and enforcement. They have also criticized the safety agency’s acting chairman, Nancy Nord, for accepting industry-funded trips.

The toy cars recalled Wednesday were sold at Dollar General retail stores from April through October this year for about $1 per pack of two or four cars. Consumers should return the toy cars to a Dollar General store for a refund.

Schylling Associates Inc of Rowley, Massachusetts, recalled 3,500 Duck Family collectible wind-up toys, 1,300 Dizzy Ducks music boxes, and 3,600 Winnie-the-Pooh spinning tops. All were sold at U.S. specialty toy stores and gift shops.

The duck wind-up toys were sold from January through August 2007 for about $8. They include a large tin wind-up duck, which pulls three little ducks

It would appear that China is shipping the USA goods designed to kill our children.

Recently a popular China-made toy has been recalled in North America and Australia after scientists found it contained a chemical which turns into a powerful drug often used in date-rape cases, when swallowed.

The toy beads, known as Aqua Dots in the US and Bindeez in Australia, are often used in art and craft projects.

Three children in Australia and two in the US were hospitalized after swallowing the beads containing the chemical.

Made In America is no longer just a patriotic idea, but maybe a matter of life or death.  PLEASE NOTE the Recall on Deadly Chinese Made goods is NOT limited to toys, there have been Pet and Human food products that are tainted as well. DO NOT BUY ANY FOOD or SEAFOOD FROM CHINA.  Check The Labels, you’d be surprised.

  3. AW, Thanks for that great link in your comment. I hope people check it out.

I don’t know what is going on with China and our regulatory commission and Nancy Nord, I think there should be less free trips for her and more inspections and protection for us.

  4. Excellent post!

Why do we as Americans let this continue to happen? Why doesn’t anyone stand up to our government? How many poisoned children is it going to take to get Americans to stop buying toys from China? How many deaths will it take? Don’t wait until it is too late for your child. It is up to us as parents to protect our children from harm.

Please click on my name for a long list of links to companies that sell toys made in America.

  5. Sandy, I normally do not post comments with links to the commenter’s advertising website, however your site is such a benefit to all concerned about this menace, I had to let it be posted. I support American Made Products! and therefore any small outlets that wants to post a link on my site to the items, are welcome to.

  6. i am making a new line of feca-toys in my garage for export to china. when are americans going to wake up and stop buying cheap garbage from china.

  7. People keep pointing fingers at the wrong problem. The place where all these ‘problems’ stem from is known as the corporate profit margin. And that problem goes way back. A prime example; the exploding Pinto. 7 cents per unit could have kept the car from exploding but that would have cut into the profit margin.

Corporations award contracts to the lowest bidder as a rule which doesn’t always mean the best of materials goes into the production process because the manufacturer also has their eye on the profit margin too.

I know your site doesn’t condone advertising of other sites, however I feel this shirt HAS to get a message across and for people to start taking notice and control back from our government and represent the peoples values and not greed from corporations!

  9. Sorry for the advertising, but there is a link on this site that sends an email to congress to pass a bill for the cpsc to have more power to fight these bad products.
